ighting upgrade may be your best investment during these tough trading times!

In this economy businesses are always on the lookout for ways to cut back on their operational and maintenance costs.  When it comes to energy usage the majority of building owners and facility managers are facing this same old predicament; whether to bite the bullet and invest in new lighting technology now or whether to keep replacing breakages and prolong the expense of an upgrade for another day, the day when more profit is being made?

It is here that ICR Group in Holywell tries to help reluctant clients with dwindling cash reserves to look at the bigger energy picture and to point them in the direction of support to upgrade, such as the Carbon Trust rather than use up their profit. Upgrading your lights saves you money, it is the sure fast way that you can reduce your energy costs.

A lot of commercial buildings in Wales, where ICR are based, were built well over 40 years ago with Asbestos roofs and in great need of lighting and heating upgrades. These old buildings are very energy inefficient with many of them over-lit and using inefficient lights (we point these buildings out as energy hogs).  Therefore, energy-efficiency and improved performance from your lighting and heating products must be at the heart of all energy hogging buildings if you want to reduce your operating and maintenance costs.

Replacing old lighting fittings is an expense but it does have a quick return on investment and they do pay for themselves within an average of three years.

We’ve estimated that lighting consumes about 30% to 40% of the total electricity you use in your business, with the majority of energy used for lighting occurring during day time at that higher electric rate for businesses.

But even with these beautiful statistics at hand and all our money saving options and carbon reducing dreams, if you don’t have the cash to invest then nothing we tell you is going to help. Apart from Carbon Trusts Zero interest loans that is.

It’s probably why LED upgrades are viewed rather suspiciously in the business community, I think it is because the initial outlay can be a few quid.”  Kevin Warburton, Director.

So how can ICR help?

It’s all in the LED site survey.

We can do a site survey for you, a visit to your business will help us asses your lighting needs and discuss your current lighting system. We can also point out where your energy trolls are having a laugh and running your meter at high speed.  We will point out old fittings, under lit areas and old technology. Room size is a factor we consider too, for instance if you need a cherry picker to change lighting we will probably offer you long life LEDs (yes, that’s good bye to the annual cherry picker).

But before a site visit it’s probably best to consider your budget and how much you can spend; then we tailor the survey to look at the best savings and we’ll hit high energy locations first.

For instance we visited the Springfield, a 22 bedroom Hotel in Holywell. Sebastian the owner, said:

“Most of these lights are on constantly and they cost the hotel a fortune in fittings and electricity, I can’t see any other way of doing it.”

We suggested a simple sensors solution to be installed in certain locations in the hotel plus a change of luminaires and colour.  It did the trick.  Lower electricity bills and a softer light for atheistic reason worked well, but here’s the ‘rub’ the initial investment will take 2 years to pay back.

In an audit we always show the potential payback on the investment plus carbon footprint reduction, electricity savings, decreased utility costs and how much the new lights and fittings cost per item, you get a full picture of savings and costs this way.

Luminaires and lamps aren’t the only options for upgrades either. Lighting control sensors are a real help with the battle of the electric meter. Take Glyndwr University, we looked at the outside and inside of the building and straight away we could see where new technology and clever sensors would cut down consumptions straight away.  This will also be a big help with their Carbon reduction measure too.

Lighting upgrades are extremely cost-effective, generally providing an ROI in three years depending on what you buy. However, in this economy many companies may find themselves low on cash to pay the up-front costs of a lighting system replacement.

“If your company has the cash to upgrade then schedule it into your annual maintenance plan. If you don’t have the funds consider the Carbon Trust 0% interest scheme for SME’s. We all understand that LEDs are a great way to save money but if you don’t have the cash then it’s a terrible deal.” Kevin Warburton.
